Baojiaxiang is a Berlin-based artist working at the intersection of music, technology, spirituality, and thought. The interview moves through memories, perception, overstimulation, and the shifting patterns between emotion, sound, and reality.

What is your earliest memory of music?

I am four years old. We are in the basement of some institutional building. I go into the piano studio. White walls, concrete floor, black doors. The piano is also black, a grand. She tells me what the staff means, which notes correspond to what length of time, and asks me to play a short piece. It consists entirely of half and whole notes. It feels natural. Mom is waiting outside when we are finished. They excitedly discuss my future.

What’s the first memory you have of wanting to make music?

I am twenty years old, staying up late to edit a video for a class. I am in the iMovie interface, doing an exercise in diegetic audio. I have the sudden realization that I can place any sound into this interface, layer it with other sounds, position them across time without reference to a grid. I spent the rest of the night doing this.

Do you use sound to shape how you feel?

Sound and emotions are linked through a mathematically consistent set of numerologically significant patterns that are represented across everything, nature, architecture, religion, etc. I understand the mechanics by which these work but I do not consciously calculate the emotions that are made, relying instead on a trance state in communion with God to direct what I do. My intentions are purely administrative.

How do you experience vulnerability in your work, and how do you decide what to share?

The trance state is itself an act of vulnerability, and I aspire, in spite of an increasingly hostile world, to live in complete submission to Creation, with the intention of understanding it and navigating it with Grace, with reverence for Power and disdain for those who seek to possess it.

In an increasingly hostile world, do you feel your work is pushing against it, or creating a space apart from it?

In a world where all violence is predicted and controlled all fights are performances, dances. We work in whispers and messages burned after reading.
